We got an answer from an informed listener: "Referring to your earlier conversation this evening (December 21) on shooting down drones at the London airports, I believe the reason why projectiles, e.g., bullets, shot into the sky land with a terminal velocity significantly less than the initial velocity is due to air resistance with causes a continual frictional dissipation of the projectile's kinetic energy as it moves throught the air. Were the experiment carried out in a near vacuum, e.g., on the moon's surface, I suspect the two velocities would be very close to each other."
